Saint Mary (a)

Graphite on rough paper · 8 × 11 inches

This interpretation of the “Madonna and Child” relies on flowing contour rather than ornament. Mary’s bowed head and continuous veil form a rhythmic arc around the infant.

Curves repeat across the veil, hair, and child, merging them into a single organic movement. Holiness emerges through rhythm, not symbolism.

Visible construction lines and soft graphite modeling preserve immediacy. Sacred presence is rendered as tenderness—devotion expressed through intimacy and enclosure.
